Questions
How am I accepted into the management program?
There are six pre-management courses that must be completed before application:
- Acc 200 Principles of Accounting
- Stat 221 Principles of Statistics
- Econ 110 Micro/Macro Economics
- Math 119 Intro to Calculus
- I Sys 100 MS Excel
- I Sys 101 MS PowerPoint
The pre-management GPA and overall GPA both must be at least a 3.0 to be eligible to apply. However, these minimums do not guarantee acceptance to the Marriott School. The application deadlines for the management program are:
- Fall Last Working day of June by 4:30 pm
- Winter Last Working day of October by 4:30 pm
- Spring Last Working day of February by 4:30 pm
How do I apply?
To apply, you must fill out an online application at marriottschool.byu.edu/apply.cfm. Online applications for each of the different degrees offered by the Marriott School can be located on that web site.
What GPA do I need to apply?
In order to be eligible to apply you will need:
Minimum 3.0 overall GPA (minimum GPA does not guarantee acceptance)
Minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA (minimum GPA does not guarantee acceptance)
Other than grades, what goes into the application?
In addition to grades, the application includes a 500-word essay and graduation plan.
How long does it usually take until I am ready to apply to the management program?
On average, it typically takes students three semesters to be ready to apply to the Marriott School of Management. It can take less time if you plan well. By completing the prerequisites and completing some of the GE requirements, many students apply to the Marriott School before their junior year.
What classes should I take now?
Typically students apply to the program after their sophomore year. During your first two years it is recommended that you complete a majority of your general education requirements, as well as all of your pre-management courses. We recommend that students take the Math 119, Stat 221, and their computer proficiency courses within their first year. It is also recommended that you take Acc 200 and Econ 110 during your first semester of your sophomore year. If you plan to apply to the accounting or information systems programs you will have the remaining semester to complete additional required courses.
Can I take all of the prerequisite classes in the same semester?
It is not recommended because of the time and effort required for each class.
What generals will be covered with management classes?
The pre-management courses that will count toward your generals include:
- Acc 200 GE: Quantitative Reasoning
- Stat 221 GE: Languages of Learning/Quantitative Reasoning
- Math 119 GE: Languages of Learning/Quantitative Reasoning
- Econ 110 GE: Social Science
In addition, M Com 320 will count toward your advanced writing GE.
Do I have to take Math 119 or does another math requirement fulfill the prerequisite?
You can also take Math 112 to fulfill the math requirement. However, Math 119 is designed for business students.
What transfer classes count?
At marriottschool.byu.edu/management/transfer you can find information on transfer courses from many colleges. If your college or course you have taken is not in our database, you can bring, send, or fax us a syllabus of the course you have taken. Our fax number is 801-422-0942. Please include your name, student ID number, phone number, and email so we can notify you once your courses have been evaluated. Also, transferred pre-management courses will be discounted in the application process a third of a step when figuring a student's pre-management GPA (i.e. A to A-). The process of getting a class approved typically takes one to two weeks.
What do my AP credits count for?
A score of 4 on the AP statistics test will waive your Stat 221 requirement. A math AP score of 4 on AB or 3 on BC will waive your Math 119 requirement. In order to waive the Econ 110 requirement you must have received a 5 on the micro and a 5 on the macro economics tests.
Can I test out of ISys 100/ISys 101?
You may challenge the course by passing the Excel or PowerPoint MOS Certification examination. For more information contact the Information Systems Department at marriottschool.byu.edu.
Do you discount if I retake I Sys 100 & 101 a second time?
No, we do not. We make sure that you have passed both classes.
Should I repeat a class?
Determining whether or not you should retake a class is a decision that should be carefully weighed. Any repeated pre-management courses will be discounted in the application process (i.e. A to A-), and no pre-management course may be repeated more than once.
How many times may I repeat a class?
You may repeat prerequisite courses only once. General education and religion courses may be repeated more than once, although this is strongly discouraged.
What if I retake a class but do worse on it the second time? Do you take the best grade?
No, we take the most recent grade. If you decide to retake a class, it is important that you do better than you did the first time. Remember that when you retake a prerequisite class, we discount the grade .3.
What should I do if I cannot get into a class that I need? (i.e. The class is full or the registration system does not allow me to register for it).
Before classes actually begin they may appear full online. As students drop the classes, seats become available. Be diligent in checking back online for available seats. You may also contact the instructor and ask permission to be added to a class or take an add/drop card and ask permission to be admitted on the first day of class.

Do I have to wait until I am in the program to take my emphasis classes or can I get some of them done before?
The majority of the emphasis classes must be taken after the integrated core. There are a few classes that are open to all students in the university that will count toward emphasis classes. You should check to make sure that they count toward your area of emphasis before taking them. Some of these emphasis classes include OrgB 347 and BusM 430.
What if I want to change my emphasis after I am admitted to the Marriott School?

Does the Marriott School require its students to do internships?
The Marriott School does not require students to do an internship, but students are strongly encouraged to do one. An internship will help give you practical experience and make you a stronger job candidate.
What should I do if I want to do an internship during a fall semester? Is there a way to defer?
Yes. If you need to defer for a mission, an internship, or other reasons, you will need to apply for a deferment. Once you are accepted into the Marriott School, you must be enrolled in a three-credit hour class for every semester that you are in the program (excluding spring/summer terms). Deferment Forms are available online at marriottschool.byu.edu/management/forms.cfm.
