Where Do You Want To Go?

Determining which employers to target in your job search can be challenging.  You’re likely interested in a specific geographic location, as well as in a few industries.  Your job search will become more focused as you define your interests and research which companies to target.

Based upon the criteria that are important to you, there are many different ways to find potential employers to pursue.

Geography

If you are intent on starting your career in a specific geographic market, there are a number of valuable resources available to you in finding potential employers.

The Business Career Center in the Tanner Building maintains a small library located on the west wall of the facility.  Here you will find Books of Lists from the majority of large US Metropolitan Areas.  These books list the top employers in each industry located in that particular area.  The center library also contains copies of the latest Business Journals from various US cities.  Regional Business Journals are an excellent resource in finding opportunities in a specific market.

The Marriott School maintains Management Society Chapters in different cities around the country.  Reaching out to the leadership in the chapter where you are interested in relocating is a good way to find out about potential employment opportunities.

LDS Employment is a regional resource available as well.  Their offices are available to help connect you and your interests with church members or opportunities in specific geographic areas.

Industry

If you are interested in targeting a specific industry, there are a number of Marriott School clubs which are based on s Banking, Consulting, and Technology.  Participation in club events and networking with other club members will allow you to gain an understanding of the companies within your targeted industry who have a recruiting relationship with BYU and how to pursue those opportunities.

In addition to the clubs the Business Career Center has counselors who can offer insight into the best potential employers in any industry.  Feel free to contact the center and make an appointment.

Unsure

If you are unsure about what may interest you, reach out. Each fall the Business Career Center hosts a Business Careers Information Fair with opportunities to hear about careers in different fields.  Attend club meetings within the various clubs at BYU.  Talk with your professors.   Attend the semi-annual University Career Fair at the Wilkinson Center, as it is a great chance to visit with potential employers and get a feeling for what interests you.

Use eRecruiting as a resource.  It lists all of the companies coming to hold formal interviews on campus, as well as companies who are interested in holding resume drops. Often companies hold information sessions.  Attend these information sessions to gain a perspective of what companies do, what type of preparation is required to be considered for a job or internship, etc.

The key to your success will be getting involved in various events and using  resources early in your career decision phases so that you can be best prepared for employment opportunities as you near graduation.
