Students Walking OutsideRaise Awareness with Students

The key to a successful recruiting experience at BYU’s Marriott School is in making a connection with students. Let the Career Center Staff help you create a plan to meet as many or as few students as you desire. There are multiple established options for inviting students to meet with you; you are encouraged to use these options, as well as your own creative ideas to connect with students.

The established opportunities for your organization to meet with students include hosting an on-campus presentation or information session, sponsoring a student mixer, hosting a field study, providing a site tour, or coordinating with various clubs for off-campus activities.

On-Campus Presentation or Information Session

On-campus presentations are excellent opportunities for you to meet students interested in your organization. Presentations are often most effective when held two to four weeks before formal recruiting interviews. Typical presentations are hosted in the early evening with a formal presentation lasting approximately 40 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of Q&A. Students and recruiters then mingle, as organizations often elect to provide refreshments for attendees. On-campus presentations typically are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursday evenings. While start times may vary, the standard is a 6:00 p.m. start time. Presentations are most frequently held in conference rooms or classrooms across the Tanner Building.

Before advertising your event to students, the Career Center Staff member who assists you will reserve a location for you, request your audiovisual needs, help you select a menu, and confirm with you the target audience for your presentation. You should review together the types of advertising you would like to employ. If you would like to ship materials to the school for availability before or during your presentation, please discuss your desire with a staff member.

Field Study

A targeted approach, many organizations have found their internship pool as a result of sponsoring a field study. Typically arranged months in advance, organizations coordinate with a faculty member and several students to solve a real-world business problem. Students can confront marketing, finance, supply chain, product development, or human resources business problems.

Organizations view students in their working environments and measure their added value in a direct, quantifiable way. Students gain consulting and problem-solving skills as they solve organizations problems.  Contact Roger McCarty at 801-422-8928 or at roger_mccarty@byu.edu for more information.

Site Tour/Club Activity

Marriott School students are increasingly gaining experience. If you would like to arrange a site tour of your organization or would like to accompany students on a travel experience, contact the career center. Clubs frequently arrange opportunities for their members to hear guest lecturers, travel on field trips, etc.
